Hallo Dana,

My name is Susan from The Netherlands. I just took up knitting again and I JUST LOVE IT! Although I can knit I have never knitted a sweater or a hat. My knitting abilities are limited to scarves!

Thank you so much for your videos. They are really helpful. I just stumbled upon the one of the basic hat. Really nice and shows people like me a lot.

Due to my regular job I cannot knit as much as I would like but I get encouraged when I see people like you do it with so much passion and dedication.

God bless,

Susan

Hi Dana,
Great tutorial. I'm a beginner knitter but eager to try your hat pattern! I've made a few hats in past but always have difficulty with the cast off. Using your pattern, how many stitches should I have left on my needles before I remove the last stitches with the blunt eye needle.

Thanks for your help,
Faith

Hello Faith,

Thank you so much for you support! I think I ended with about 17 stitches left on my needle. I'm guessing because I no longer have the hat to get the exact number. But you can really close up whenever you are comfortable. I would recommend anything lower than 20 stitches to make the closure look neat.

I hope this was helpful.

Just found your site. I do all kinds of crafts from crochet to looms, to woodoworking, and many others, I recently decided to take up needle knitting. To do the beginner hat, do you have to do the transfer of needles or can you do it all on the circular needles? I'm kinda scared about trying to switch needles and I don't have the money to get any. so was hoping I could make it work with just the circ needles? thank you so much for helping so many people learn the art of knitting

Hey Sara,

I'm glad you found us and that you love the tutorial and knitting!

As for the circulars, I knit my very first hat on circulars completely. It was difficult as I decreased, but I was using worsted weight yarn that could handle it. You can totally use circulars all the way around if you like. The DPNs are merely my preference.

Let me know how it turns out.

Hi Dana,
I'm making my dad a hat and I started knitting the pattern you have for the Beginners Hat and I was wondering instead of casting on 80 stitches can you do 100 or 120 because the 80 doesn't look like it would be big enough for his head. Would casting on 100 or 120 change to pattern?

God bless,
Lauren

Dana said...

Hey Lauren,

No, casting on more stitches will not change the pattern at all, so long as it's an even #. It will be okay.

I'd love to see how your dad's hat turns out. Will you please post pictures to the Knitted Oaks facebook page?

Hi Dana,

First of all, thanks for your blog and excellent videos! They are fantastic. I love your theme song, by the way!

I'm new to knitting, and after a few scarves I want to try your beginner's hat project. I live in Mexico and can't find the yarn you recommend. What I have is "size 4 medium, Lion Brand acrylic." Will that work, or is worsted wool yarn essential?

Thanks!
Samantha

Hola Samantha!

You don't have to use worsted weight yarn, but you should use thicker yarn that requires at least size 8 needles. If you use Size 4 needles, your hat will fit a baby instead of you.

Joann.com has great yarns and other knitting materials for less and they'll ship right to you.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Dana,

I am a real beginner in knitting and I am really excited. I knitted a basic scarf before and now I am trying to knit a hat. I loved this pattern of yours.
I bought worsted yarn today and the lady in the shop suggested me to buy the one with (18M, 20R) marked on a square on the label. I got US 10, 14" circular needle to work with it. Is it necessary that I stick to 80 stitches or if not, how should i vary the number of stitches and on what basis? I am sorry if my question is too basic, but I am very excited about making this hat!
Thanks a lot and I love the way you finished this hat!

Hello Reincarnated,

Welcome to knitting. I'm excited to see how your hat turns out.

I used 24" circulars for this hat. So you may want to consider that before you cast on. Using 17" may be the perfect fit for a child or a baby.

As for the amount of stitches, a little more or less than 80 is perfectly fine. I actually have this hat on my needles for someone now and I had to cast on 114 stitches due to the width of the person's head. As long as you have an even # of stitches, you'll be fine.

Your question was just fine. I look forward to seeing how you hat turns out. You can post pictures on our facebook page if you'd like.

Thanks so much for your kind words!

Ok I am suppose to be working, not watching you and digging through my stash to see if I have the materials to make this! Dang it I don't have the needle size....I am going to make this for my honey!! YOU ROCK!

Dana said...

@Sweetdrk1 I am glad that you are going to make this for your honey. I know the feeling of when you want to cast on and you check the materials list and something is missing.

I'm sure all will work out. Feel free to post pictures of your hat on our FB page.

God bless!

Hi! I just started knitting and I'm learning how to make this hat for my mom. Thank you so much for posting this pattern. This is exactly what I'm looking for. But I do have a question. Can this work with a size 8 29" circular needle? Thanks! Good luck with your knitting! :)

Dana said...

@sakurachan529
I'm so happy that you found the pattern and that it's exactly what you are looking for. You can definitely use 29" circulars if you are going for a more wider circumference. But if you still plan on casting on the amount that I have in the pattern, 24" circulars are your best bet for the same results shown in the photo.

I found your video on YouTube. I am so thankful I found it. So helpful! I have been knitting only a few years and have stuck to baby blankets and scarves. Just recently found out that I will be a Nana (for the 7th time). Amazing but this is as exciting news as the first. I have a desire to make baby hats and maybe booties. Your video has helped me get an idea of how hats are put together. If you have tips about baby hats, I would love to see them. I've looked at other patterns online but haven't found an excellent step-by-step helpful video until yours. God bless you.

Congratulations Julie and the new addition to your family. I'm so grateful that you found our tutorials to eb helpful.

I will work on some baby hat videos for you. New videos will be posted next Month.

Thank you for sharing your kind words and God bless you and your family!
